John Brown: Murderer or Martyr

I think John Brown is a martyr because he thought that god chose him to do something about the slaves and wanted to free them. So he tried to kill lots of people and killed 5 men and boys and even wanted to burn down a whole town to free all slaves. Then he got stabbed in the shoulder which then lead him going to jail and getting executed for treason and something else that I couldn't find.
